National Bank of Cambodia Teams Up with Travelex for Khmer Riel Transactions

Travelex, a prominent foreign exchange brand, has collaborated with the National Bank of Cambodia to commence trading Cambodia’s national currency, the Khmer Riel (KHR), at Singapore’s Changi Airport.

Changi, one of the biggest transportation hubs in Asia and a gateway to Cambodia, will host Travelex’s initial Riel trading at Terminals 2 and 3. Since last year, Cambodia Airways and Cambodia Angkor Air have both offered service between Cambodia and Changi.

The recent announcement closely follows the Memorandum of Understanding between the National Bank of Cambodia and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). Together, they are collaborating on the Financial Transparency Corridor initiative, which aims to create digital infrastructure facilitating trade and cross-border financial services between small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Singapore and Cambodia. This initiative aims to create digital infrastructure to support trade and cross-border financial services between SMEs in Singapore and Cambodia.

Changi will allow customers to purchase and sell Cambodian Riel in exchange for a variety of currencies, including Singaporean Dollars, US Dollars, Australian Dollars, European Euros, and Japanese Yen.

Travelex’s investment in the Khmer Riel and its decision to trade the currency in one of Asia’s leading financial hubs mark a significant milestone. This move enables the Riel to be traded with other currencies in Singapore for the first time, signifying a key development for the currency in the global market.

The Cambodian central bank has been promoting the Riel in recent years as a way to increase the efficacy of its monetary policy and guarantee long-term stability and economic prosperity. Furthermore, the National Bank of Cambodia has taken significant steps to expand the Riel’s presence in international markets. This includes connecting the bank’s blockchain-based Bakong payment system with other central banks and major commercial payment system providers, following a successful integration with Thailand’s payment system. These initiatives signify Cambodia’s commitment to strengthening its currency’s position and fostering international financial integration.

Dragon Wang, Commercial Director, Travelex Asia expressed his delight in supporting Cambodia’s national currency and broader economy by enabling the exchange of Riels at Changi Airport. He says, “Providing Riel at Changi will, first and foremost, afford travellers travelling both to and from Cambodia greater convenience in exchanging Riel than ever before. We are also really proud to be playing our part in Cambodia’s journey in raising the Riel’s impact and availability.”

High air ticket prices pose challenges for Vietnam’s domestic tourism recovery

Over the Tet holiday, round-trip tickets to domestic locations are virtually comparable to outward tour packages, providing hurdles for Vietnam’s domestic tourism recovery as many choose for abroad travel.
According to VnExpress polls, a four-night travel package from Hanoi to Thailand on February 14, the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, costs roughly VND10-11 million (US$410-451), while return jet tickets from Hanoi to Phu Quoc cost VND10.6 million.

On the opening days of the same vacation, one travel business provides a four-day tour package traveling from Ho Chi Minh City to Taiwan for VND12 million per person.

During the same time period, economy class tickets on the HCMC-Hanoi route cost up to VND8 million while business class tickets cost up to VND16 million.

According to data from travel operator Best Price, ticket costs for flights from Ho Chi Minh City during Tet have risen by 170-300% compared to regular days, and by 150-265% from Hanoi.

Air tickets for the HCMC-Thanh Hoa route now cost around VND1.4 million per person in November, but the price for February 8, one day before Lunar New Year’s Eve, has risen to VND3.4 million.

On weekdays, tickets from HCMC to Vinh cost approximately 1.2 million, but they rise to VND3.5 million in the days leading up to Tet.

Flights from Hanoi to Da Nang cost around VND727,000 on weekdays but rise to VND1.6 million around Tet. Similarly, weekday tickets from Hanoi to Phu Quoc Island cost only VND914,000, but during Tet, visitors must spend VND2.8 million.

According to Nguyen Huu Cuong, general director of Trang An Travel, “cheap tickets are very rare” during Tet, especially for flights originating from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.

Domestic round-trip ticket rates on some routes over the vacation are equivalent to or greater than package tour airfares to Singapore, Thailand, and Cambodia, according to him.

“High airfare prices are one of the reasons why tourists have switched to traveling abroad during the Tet holiday instead of going on domestic trips,” Cuong said.

“This would leave negative impact on domestic tourism recovery and competent authorities should sit together to solve the problem.”

When Vietnam relaunched tourism in March 2022, domestic airfare rates skyrocketed. Tourists did not have many alternatives, however, because overseas destinations had not yet reopened their borders at the time, and travel demand soared after two years of remaining at home.

Many international lines have reopened this year, and China, the world’s largest outbound market, has also restored air travel with Vietnam.

As a result, the skyrocketing domestic ticket costs that have resulted in tour package price increases would make it impossible for the domestic tourist business to recover, according to Cuong.

Tet, which begins on February 10, 2024, brings millions of migrant workers from major cities and industrial hubs home for family reunions, as well as holiday-goers travelling to tourism locations.

As of late September, Vietnam has served 93 million domestic visitors, with the government aiming to reach 102 million by the end of the year.

PATA joins hands with India to extend reach of “Travel for LiFE” initiative across Asia Pacific

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has joined forces with India to expand the reach of the “Travel for LIFE” project across the Asia Pacific region, marking a watershed moment for sustainable tourism. This news follows India’s successful hosting of the 46th edition of the PATA Travel Mart 2023, which took place from October 4 to October 6 at the International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC), Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

Around 1000 delegates attended the PATA Travel Mart (PTM), a significant worldwide commercial expo in the tourism sector. It was a critical platform for facilitating trade transactions between worldwide buyers and sellers in the tourism sector.

PTM 2023 offered informative information sessions at the PATA Forum, as well as engaging the young through the PATA young Symposium, in addition to fostering these critical trade relationships. The exhibition of the Ministry of Tourism’s “Travel for LIFE” campaign, which drew enormous attention from the worldwide travel trade community, was a notable feature of the event.

Following the Travel Mart, a critical PATA Board meeting was held, during which the Ministry of Tourism presented the Board members with the “Travel for LIFE” proposal. The project was lauded by the PATA Board, prompting the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, to commit to working with PATA to extend the program across the Asia Pacific region.

This collaboration is significant in light of the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration 2023, issued during India’s Presidency of the G20, which acknowledged the launch of “Travel for LIFE” and urged support for the creation of responsible and sustainable smart destinations. “Travel for LiFE,” created by the Ministry of Tourism, is in line with the Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) ideology, which was publicly launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on October 19, 2022.

Mission LiFE, a global mass movement lead by India, encourages individuals and communities worldwide to take action to safeguard the environment from the effects of climate change.

The Ministry of Tourism will establish a dedicated PATA desk to improve interaction with PATA on “Travel for LIFE” and other tourism-related areas of collaboration. This agreement is noteworthy since it is the first big international partnership for the “Travel for LIFE” initiative after its global premiere on World Tourism Day, September 27, 2023. The Ministry of Tourism is already working with UNEP and the World Tourism Organization to improve the Travel for LIFE initiative.

“Travel for LIFE” reflects the “Pro Planet People” mentality and operates on the core principles of living a “Lifestyle of the planet, for the planet, and by the planet.” It strives to instill large behavioral changes in travelers and tourism firms, therefore greatly contributing to environmental conservation while maintaining socio-cultural sustainability.

The program has outlined a comprehensive list of actions that are aligned with the eight core themes of “Travel for LIFE,” which include energy conservation, water preservation, reducing single-use plastic, waste reduction, empowering local businesses and communities, respecting local culture and heritage, consuming local foods, and preserving nature.

Beyond raising awareness, the “Travel for LIFE” initiative aims to urge tourist firms to improve their sustainability practices by displaying the Travel for LIFE-Signed up badge. As a result, these firms can apply for bronze, silver, and gold levels of accreditation under the “Travel for LIFE” program.

To make “Travel for LIFE” a broad movement, the Ministry of Tourism is working with all stakeholders in the tourism ecosystem, including state governments, industry actors, destinations, and travelers themselves. This program places India as a leader in promoting sustainable and ethical tourism, utilizing tourism as a strong tool to accomplish the SDGs by 2030.

PATA and India’s partnership on the “Travel for LIFE” program promises to develop a more responsible and ecologically sensitive attitude to travel throughout the Asia Pacific region, which is a big step forward for sustainable tourism.

Goa’s Dudhsagar Falls Reopens to Tourists: Online Ticket Booking Now Available

According to recent updates, the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) has commenced arranging jeep safaris for Dudhsagar Waterfall. For safety considerations, the forest drive and these falls were shut down during the monsoon.

GTDC Chairman Ganesh Gaonkar, at an event celebrating the reopening of tourism activities in Kullem, revealed that the tourism corporation has chosen an agency to oversee the online management of all Dudhsagar Waterfall-related activities. He emphasized that the tourism department is committed to improving facilities for both tourists and drivers and asked the local panchayat to work with GTDC in the digitisation initiatives.

Mr. Gaonkar also advised jeep drivers to treat visitors with consideration, respect, and responsibility and to make sure they depart with priceless memories. He added that all trails and hikes throughout Goa will be under the supervision of the Goa Forest Development Corporation (GFDC).

Usually, the jeep safari season at Dudhsagar starts on October 2 each year. On weekdays, about 170 jeeps are allowed, and on weekends, that number rises to 225. In order to minimize disturbance to wildlife, the forest department limits the number of cars going through the forest. Transporters face a challenging 14 km round trip, ferrying passengers along the same route. The main source of income for the locals in Dudhsagar now that the local mines have closed is tourism. For a total of INR 3500 every trip, each registered jeep operator with the Forest Department carries about seven people at a cost of INR 500 each.

Mr. Gaonkar encouraged individuals to report any problems they encounter, allowing the government to address them swiftly. Due to safety concerns, the forest administration had prohibited tourists from Dudhsagar Falls during the monsoon. However, some visitors made an effort to reach the falls via different ways. Mr. Gaonkar disclosed that the GTDC is actively engaged in the promotion of sustainable tourism in the hinterland regions of the state.
