3-month ban on fishing and tourism in the Sundarbans

3-month ban on fishing and tourism in the Sundarbans

The forest division has imposed a ban for three-months on angling and tourism happenings in the rivers and waterways of the Sundarbans, which would stay active from 1 June to 31 August.

All through this time, movement of various categories of vessels, comprising ferries and angling trawlers, along with admission of fishermen and honey gatherers, will be provisionally postponed in the Sundarbans.

The purpose of this provision is to highlight the harmless nurturing and movement of fish and wild
animals.

Hawlader Azad Kabir, who supervises the Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Center, said that rather than
exclusively aiming on income generation, the government is taking this step to augment the beauty of the forest and encourage the benign breeding of fish and animals.

The official highlighted the fact that the forest division will implement stringent rules to stop all practices of wildlife hunting, comprising deer, in addition to using toxic substance for angling in the rivers and canals of the Sundarbans all through the time of ban.

As stated by the forest department, 251 types of fish discharge eggs during the monsoon period, making it essential to forbid fishing in the forest.

Moreover, the prohibition targets facilitating safe upbringing of 315 classes of birds, 35 types of reptiles, and 42 varieties of mammals.

Authorities are of the opinion that the breeding of fish and countless animal types could pose a problem by the noise created by functioning water vehicles in rivers and canals.
