UK to brace Easter weekend travel chaos
Motorists in the UK have been advised to expect significant traffic delays over the Easter weekend. The RAC has warned that 17 million car journeys are set to take place, with some major roads likely to experience the worst congestion on Good Friday.
The A303, the M5 south and the M25 anticlockwise are all predicted to see more than double the normal amount of traffic. Delays are also likely to be increased by engineering work on the railways, including the closure of London Euston station over the bank holiday weekend.
Those heading to the continent could face even further problems, with holidaymakers warned that they could face two-hour delays at the Port of Dover over the weekend. Ferry companies are asking coach operators booked on sailings on Good Friday to spread their travel across the three-day period from Thursday to Saturday.
The disruption at the Port of Dover is due to French border officials carrying out extra checks and stamping UK passports following Brexit.
Last weekend, there were chaotic scenes at the port when thousands of people were delayed, reportedly by up to 14 hours.
Transport minister Richard Holden described last weekend’s conditions at Dover as “unacceptable” and urged ferry companies to spread the travel across the three-day period. Despite the expected travel chaos, figures from aviation analytics company Cirium show that 10,218 flights are scheduled to leave British airports between Good Friday and Easter Monday.
Overall, people have been advised to allow extra time for travel and to consider alternative routes or travel dates if possible.
The RAC has recommended that those heading to the south and west of the UK get on the road as early as possible on Good Friday or travel on a different day entirely. Meanwhile, ferry passengers are being urged to allow 120 minutes to complete border controls and check-in at the Kent port.
The double bank holiday weekend is expected to be particularly busy, with around two million people expected to head abroad.
