Goa tourism dept re-issue guidelines following drowning at Keri beach

Following four drownings at Keri Beach in Goa on Sunday, the tourism department reissued the safety guidelines it published in December of last year.

According to Sunnel Anchipaka, Director of Tourism, the terrible tragedy, has forced them to re-issue the guidelines in the public interest.

“We are deeply saddened by Sunday’s incident,” said Anchipaka. He also appealed to the tourists and locals to follow safety guidelines.

“We want people to enjoy it without disregarding safety aspects,” he said. He also warned that those found violating the laws in place will be penalised.

A person or individuals found drinking on the beach or littering will be fined Rs 5000, with a maximum fine of Rs 50000. Alternatively, they may face legal consequences under provisions of the Indian Penal Code.

Earlier, on Sunday, four youths drowned at the Keri beach. They were part of a group of 23 youth from Candolim village and Mapusa town.

The group was headed towards Arambol from Keri, when a set of four retreated to a rocky area ostensibly to take selfies. The sudden wave then swept them into the sea.

Another from the group, Asif, who rushed into the waters in a bid to save his friends suffered injuries and is admitted to the Goa Medical College and hospital, Bambolim.
