Luxury sales in Hong Kong increases

In July, the retail sales of Hong Kong continued to speed up as tourists rushed back to the municipality and the job market scenario got improved.

Starting right from watches, jewelry, clocks and valuable gifts, Hong Kong retail sales increased by 20% annually to HKD 4.95 billion, as per the information of the Census and Statistics Department of the government unveiled last week.

Retail sales in different product categories increased by 17% to HKD 33 billion. Also, the growth showed a promising comparison with the same time a year back, when Hong Kong was seeing stringent restrictions related to Covid-19. At that time, tourism to the municipality was extremely low-slung. Much of the luxury
revenue of Hong Kong is derived from tourists, mainly from China, who go there to buy goods. The border of Hong Kong with the mainland China reopened at the beginning of the year.

Starting right from watches, clocks, jewelry, and valuable gifts, for the initial seven months, retail sales surged 64% to HKD 35.36 billion. For the period, the total retail sales went up to 20% to HKD 238.05 billion.

Around 3.6 million visitors in July came to Hong Kong, compared to 48,048, the same month 2022. Around 3 million were from the mainland China, versus 40,083 in 2022.
