Spanish town’s Tomatina party lures tourists

Spain's Annual 'Tomatina' Street War Attracts Thousands of Tourists for Tomato Fight Extravaganza

Around 15,000 people, many of whom were tourists, plastered each other with tomatoes on Wednesday during Spain’s annual “Tomatina” street war in the eastern town of Buol.

Trucks dropped 120 tons of overripe tomatoes into the town’s main thoroughfare for people to toss. The street brawl drenches the street, its homes, and the participants with red pulp.

The festival’s tickets start at 12 euros ($13).Within minutes of the hour-long lunchtime skirmish ending, the municipality sprays off the area and the revelers shower.

The celebration, which takes place on the final Wednesday of August, was inspired by a food battle between local youngsters in the town, which is located in a tomato-producing region, in 1945.

In the 1980s, media attention elevated it to the status of a national and international event, attracting participants from all over the world.

Participants normally wear T-shirts and shorts and use swimming goggles to protect their eyes.Spain has designated the party as a worldwide tourism destination.
