Many places in 2023 shows strong tourism revival
International tourism is slowly progressing to get back to the levels of pre-pandemic times, with huge number of people visiting various places in the first quarter of this year compared to the same time last year.
As per the recent data from UNWTO: What they’ve learned is that the second UNWTO World Tourism Barometer of 2023 pinpoints the speedy recovery of the sector which has continued in 2023. It highlights the fact that international arrivals in the first quarter of 2023 reached 80% of pre-pandemic levels in general.
In the first three months of 2023, an estimation of around 235 million tourists toured globally. It’s more than double the numbers witnessed same time in 2022.
Tourism has carried on showing its resilience. For 2022, revised data highlights more than 960 million tourists travelling in foreign countries in 2022, which means two-thirds of the numbers seen pre-pandemic times were recovered.
The Middle East observed the most powerful performance as the only region surpassing 2019 arrival levels and the first region to pull through numbers of the pre-pandemic in a full quarter.
Around 90% of pre-pandemic levels were achieved by Europe, motivated by strong intra-regional demand.
Africa attained around 88% and the Americas almost 85% of 2019 levels. The Pacific and Asia speed up its recuperation with 54% of the levels of pre-pandemic times. However, now, this upward trend is set to increase its speed that most destinations, mainly China, have re-opened.
