National Bank of Cambodia Teams Up with Travelex for Khmer Riel Transactions

Travelex, a prominent foreign exchange brand, has collaborated with the National Bank of Cambodia to commence trading Cambodia’s national currency, the Khmer Riel (KHR), at Singapore’s Changi Airport.

Changi, one of the biggest transportation hubs in Asia and a gateway to Cambodia, will host Travelex’s initial Riel trading at Terminals 2 and 3. Since last year, Cambodia Airways and Cambodia Angkor Air have both offered service between Cambodia and Changi.

The recent announcement closely follows the Memorandum of Understanding between the National Bank of Cambodia and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). Together, they are collaborating on the Financial Transparency Corridor initiative, which aims to create digital infrastructure facilitating trade and cross-border financial services between small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Singapore and Cambodia. This initiative aims to create digital infrastructure to support trade and cross-border financial services between SMEs in Singapore and Cambodia.

Changi will allow customers to purchase and sell Cambodian Riel in exchange for a variety of currencies, including Singaporean Dollars, US Dollars, Australian Dollars, European Euros, and Japanese Yen.

Travelex’s investment in the Khmer Riel and its decision to trade the currency in one of Asia’s leading financial hubs mark a significant milestone. This move enables the Riel to be traded with other currencies in Singapore for the first time, signifying a key development for the currency in the global market.

The Cambodian central bank has been promoting the Riel in recent years as a way to increase the efficacy of its monetary policy and guarantee long-term stability and economic prosperity. Furthermore, the National Bank of Cambodia has taken significant steps to expand the Riel’s presence in international markets. This includes connecting the bank’s blockchain-based Bakong payment system with other central banks and major commercial payment system providers, following a successful integration with Thailand’s payment system. These initiatives signify Cambodia’s commitment to strengthening its currency’s position and fostering international financial integration.

Dragon Wang, Commercial Director, Travelex Asia expressed his delight in supporting Cambodia’s national currency and broader economy by enabling the exchange of Riels at Changi Airport. He says, “Providing Riel at Changi will, first and foremost, afford travellers travelling both to and from Cambodia greater convenience in exchanging Riel than ever before. We are also really proud to be playing our part in Cambodia’s journey in raising the Riel’s impact and availability.”

New York Jets and Carnival Cruise Line Announce Partnership

Carnival Cruise Line and the New York Jets today announced a multi-year partnership. The agreement designates Carnival as a “Proud Partner of the New York Jets.”

“At Carnival, we create memorable vacation experiences filled with fun for our guests, and we see the excitement from football fans firsthand when their favorite sport is part of that fun – from our ‘sailgate’ parties to our special big game screenings at our Carnival Seaside Theater. This new partnership is a perfect way to create new opportunities to fuel that enthusiasm, since nothing is more fun to football fans than the game itself,” said Amy Martin Ziegenfuss, chief marketing officer at Carnival Cruise Line.

The partnership gives Carnival Cruise Line an opportunity to expand its brand presence in the bustling New York market, a major homeport for the company. This market holds particular significance as Carnival recently introduced Carnival Venezia earlier this year, the newest addition to the Carnival fleet that is homeported at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal, designed to immerse guests in an authentic Italian experience through all-new “Carnival Fun Italian Style” experiences.

Proudly known as America’s cruise line, Carnival’s new partnership with the New York Jets builds on its alignment with the most popular sport in America. New York Jets fans can expect to see an array of exciting opportunities and assets, including eye-catching stadium signage, a strategic presence in the digital and social realms through advertising on the Jets’ official website and the Jets Fan Network, and much more. The partnership will also feature a sweepstakes set to launch later this season providing fans with the chance to win a Carnival cruise vacation.

High air ticket prices pose challenges for Vietnam’s domestic tourism recovery

Over the Tet holiday, round-trip tickets to domestic locations are virtually comparable to outward tour packages, providing hurdles for Vietnam’s domestic tourism recovery as many choose for abroad travel.
According to VnExpress polls, a four-night travel package from Hanoi to Thailand on February 14, the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, costs roughly VND10-11 million (US$410-451), while return jet tickets from Hanoi to Phu Quoc cost VND10.6 million.

On the opening days of the same vacation, one travel business provides a four-day tour package traveling from Ho Chi Minh City to Taiwan for VND12 million per person.

During the same time period, economy class tickets on the HCMC-Hanoi route cost up to VND8 million while business class tickets cost up to VND16 million.

According to data from travel operator Best Price, ticket costs for flights from Ho Chi Minh City during Tet have risen by 170-300% compared to regular days, and by 150-265% from Hanoi.

Air tickets for the HCMC-Thanh Hoa route now cost around VND1.4 million per person in November, but the price for February 8, one day before Lunar New Year’s Eve, has risen to VND3.4 million.

On weekdays, tickets from HCMC to Vinh cost approximately 1.2 million, but they rise to VND3.5 million in the days leading up to Tet.

Flights from Hanoi to Da Nang cost around VND727,000 on weekdays but rise to VND1.6 million around Tet. Similarly, weekday tickets from Hanoi to Phu Quoc Island cost only VND914,000, but during Tet, visitors must spend VND2.8 million.

According to Nguyen Huu Cuong, general director of Trang An Travel, “cheap tickets are very rare” during Tet, especially for flights originating from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.

Domestic round-trip ticket rates on some routes over the vacation are equivalent to or greater than package tour airfares to Singapore, Thailand, and Cambodia, according to him.

“High airfare prices are one of the reasons why tourists have switched to traveling abroad during the Tet holiday instead of going on domestic trips,” Cuong said.

“This would leave negative impact on domestic tourism recovery and competent authorities should sit together to solve the problem.”

When Vietnam relaunched tourism in March 2022, domestic airfare rates skyrocketed. Tourists did not have many alternatives, however, because overseas destinations had not yet reopened their borders at the time, and travel demand soared after two years of remaining at home.

Many international lines have reopened this year, and China, the world’s largest outbound market, has also restored air travel with Vietnam.

As a result, the skyrocketing domestic ticket costs that have resulted in tour package price increases would make it impossible for the domestic tourist business to recover, according to Cuong.

Tet, which begins on February 10, 2024, brings millions of migrant workers from major cities and industrial hubs home for family reunions, as well as holiday-goers travelling to tourism locations.

As of late September, Vietnam has served 93 million domestic visitors, with the government aiming to reach 102 million by the end of the year.
